Performer
Sones de Mexico. This nationally known folk ensemble preserves and propagates the Mexican son tradition in all its breadth and depth. The rhythmic texture of this folk art ranges widely from familiar mariachi and polka to huapango and Afro-Cuban. Joel constructs the backbone of these rhythms on drumset, cajon and auxiliary percussion, and also sings.
Instructor
St. Rita High School. During Joel's tenure as the percussion instructor for St. Rita's symphonic and marching band programs, his section has won numerous awards for best percussion in marching competition and sent its graduates to university graduate programs across the country. He also offers private instruction for percussionists at any skill level.
Educator
Edwards Elementary. Joel provides a solid grounding in music enjoyment, performance and literacy for his students on Chicago's Southwest side. His program is founded on accessible rhythm games that lead naturally to sightreading and performance.
